The Hora Sfakion Anopolis Road Description
Greece has the perfect natural landscape for building impressive roads to drive on. Both on the mainland and its islands, you will find mountain areas combined with a stunning coast. Many of the Greek roads feature elements from both these sceneries, and the Hora Sfakion Anopolis Road is no exception to that. So, that is why we’ve included it on our must drive roads.
This is a spectacular serpentine road that can be found on the south coast of Crete. The recommended route for this road is between the places that have given it its name too: the town of Hora Sfakion and Anapolis.
The road features a collection of 19 hairpins, a sheer drop and many fantastic views of the coast. It starts in Hóra Sfakíon, the capital of the mountainous region of Sfakia and ends in Anopolis, a small village located on a plateau in the southern areas of the White Mountains, at an altitude of 600 m. The length of this route is of only 12 km, but it’s enough since most of it is made of turns and twists.
The Hora Sfakion Anopolis Road has many twists and turns at a sheer drop, so drivers will surely enjoy it. If you look at the map or the pictures, you will see that the tight turns make this the perfect route to drive.
The asphalted road features an elevation gain of 586 meters, and the maximum slope is 10%. Also, this area is the southernmost part of Europe and the wildest one of Crete. The White Mountains are stunning and creates a winding road that climbs it while offering beautiful views of Gavdos.
The never ending hairpins, breathtaking views and the surrounding quiet beaches make the Hora Sfakion Anopolis Road a great road to drive and one that should be on your list. It also is a dangerous road since landslides can occur at any time in the area. Even so, this adds more thrill to the drive as many people are in search of an adrenaline rush. Luckily, this route has it all, and it will satisfy any driver that’s into serpentine roads.
