Sveti Jure Road

 The Sveti Jure Road

Sveti Jure or the Biokovo road is the highest road in Croatia, and the views you can have while driving it are second to none. Since it’s located in the Biokovo mountain range, along the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll have the chance to see some breathtaking panoramic views, while driving on an exciting road, the D8. By combining a mountain with a coastal road, you’ll get the best of both. That means that you will drive on many twists and turn, while the panorama of the mountains and folds will unfold in front of you.

The road is located on the highest mountain in the country, and the pass’s elevation is of 1.762m (5,780ft). The Sveti Jure road is an exquisite one, featuring many sharp and blind curves, as well as hairpin switchbacks over the mountains. It also has some narrow sections that are barley wide enough for two cars to fit in. You might even have to reverse until you find a section that’s wide enough, so it’s not the best route for beginners.

Moreover, the D8 is asphalted, and you can drive in during any seasons. Even so, we suggest you check the weather conditions if you want to drive it during winter because it’s not that enjoyable to drive when it’s snowing. Also, the wind can be strong here, so pay attention to that as well.

The Sveti Jure road will take you through the national park Biokovo, a great place to stop by. At the top of the mountain, you will also find a large rocky dome where there’s a TV tower. The many serpentine twists and turns will take you from a 365 m altitude, where the entrance to the Natural Park is, at the top, at an elevation of 1.762 m. Also, note that the speed limit is 30km/h.

You can start the route from different departing points. If you start it from Makarska, the ascent will be 30 km long, and the elevation gain is 1662 heightmeters. Starting at Biokovo, the ascent will be 21.74 km long, while the elevation gain is 1370 heightmeters.

The Sveti Jure road combines the pleasure of driving the twisty path with enjoying the beautiful panoramic views overlooking the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea. It’s the highest road in Croatia, and it’s an exciting road to drive.
